Laser Materials Processing
ME 49700/ 3 Cr.
Brief description of the content of the course (catalog description): The purpose of this course is to introduce laser, the useful heat source that has been used in a variety of industries such as oil and gas, automotive, defense, medical and space. The basics of laser generation from different mediums, laser energy transfer through optics and fibers and, laser energy parameters will be provided as a basic knowledge in the first section of the course. Then, the process applications in different industries will be discussed. The processes such as laser surface treatment, laser welding, laser biomedical applications and laser additive manufacturing will be taught in details. Finally, for the quality purpose of processes, online monitoring and sensing using a variety of methods will be discussed. This section will include CCD and infrared cameras, spectrometers and acoustic signals.
